In celebration of Mardi Gras, Butterfly Pavilion attendees applied their skills and knowledge to a challenging scavenger hunt on February 25th and 26th, using clues and information learned throughout our exhibits to identify colorful and unique invertebrates. Participants were entered into a drawing for great prizes. Here are the stories of two of the lucky winners:
Michael D., 4 years old, winner of four kids passes
Michael had a particularly amazing time completing the scavenger hunt. His mom described his efforts as “meticulous” as he went through each clue. He turned it in when finished, satisfied with a job well done. His excitement was re-ignited when he learned he would be entered into a drawing to win a prize! He was sitting at the dinner table when he learned a few days later that he had won four free kids passes. He immediately began calculating all the ways he could use them. He could go four times, take a friend with him twice, go twice and take a friend with him once. The possibilities were endless! According to his mom, there is no kid out there that would have been more excited to win these passes than Michael!
Abigail S., 4 years old, winner of a family membership
Abigail also had a great time at Butterfly Pavilion that day, and discovered her love for creatures in Invertebrate World. “Who knew cockroaches could be so cool?” her mom said, “They got her all fired up!” Abigail was drawn as a winner of a family membership, which her mom plans to use to renew next year and continue the fun. According to her mom, Butterfly Pavilion gave Abigail a chance to “interact with things around her that she doesn’t necessarily see every day,” an incredibly valuable experience!
The Mardi Gras scavenger hunt was designed to highlight the vibrant colors, amazing adaptations, and profound diversity of the animals at Butterfly Pavilion including the stunning blue Sapphire Ornamental Tarantula, bright red Flame Scallop, and lime green Common Green Birdwing, among other creatures. Participants played detective, using what they learned from exhibits and knowledgeable staff to identify a total of nine astonishing invertebrates.
Take advantage of future opportunities to learn and explore the amazing world of invertebrates through other fun and interactive programs at Butterfly Pavilion! We look forward to seeing you.
