Training

Begin your volunteering adventure with a two-hour New Volunteer & Staff Orientation to learn more about the Butterfly Pavilion, our conservation efforts, animals and volunteer needs. Expand your skills with one of our 4 main exhibit trainings to become a specialist, each offered twice a year. We ask for only an 8-hour per month commitment, for a year.

Exhibit Opportunities:

  • Butterfly Specialist – Answer questions and share information with visitors about butterflies and plants in our Wings of the Tropics tropical conservatory.
  • Tropical Odyssey Specialist – We need you to guide our visitors through a new journey of discovery! Discover butterfly farming, travel with a butterfly through its lifecycle and explore tropical rainforest treasures. Get involved and make a difference.  Your efforts can help protect tropical rainforests around the world!
  • Water’s Edge Specialist – Serve as an interpreter at the tide pool exhibit for the visiting public, sharing information on saltwater invertebrates including sea stars, lobsters, and horseshoe crabs. Help visitors touch these fascinating sea animals!
  • Crawl-a-See-Em Specialist – Bring our arthropod exhibit to life by sharing fun and relevant hands-on activities with exhibit visitors. This training also gets you started handling our non-venomous ambassador invertebrates and sharing them with our visitors.

Other Opportunities:

  • Horticultural Assistant: Get started right away after the New Volunteer & Staff Orientation to help plant, prune, weed, and water foliage in our outdoor gardens and tropical conservatory.
  • Animal Handler: If you are interested in learning how to work with our ambassador animals, begin with the New Volunteer & Staff Orientation. The Crawl-a-See-Em Specialist Training will introduce you to our non-venomous animals and give you some practical experience handling them. After 30 hours of experience, you can sign up for one of our advanced handling trainings to learn how to work with Rosie the Tarantula!
  • Volunteer Educator: Do you want to share your passion about the natural world with others? The Butterfly Pavilion is seeking volunteers to assist in providing interactive, hands-on classroom presentations to visiting school groups. Help facilitate the ‘light bulb’ moment and watch as students get excited about insects, life cycles, and science!  Learn more.

Practical experience in each area comes from mentoring
by our experienced staff or volunteers.

Butterfly Pavilion volunteer in the Wings of the Tropics exhibit

The Butterfly Pavilion combines science education with interactive fun to teach visitors about invertebrates and conservation. Our five immersive exhibits, including our rainforest filled with 1,600 free-flying tropical butterflies, provide a year-round, unforgettable experience. Visitors can get up close and personal with live animals, enjoy daily educational programs, explore the wonder of the outdoors on the nature trail, and discover the newest traveling exhibit. Butterflies are just the beginning.
