Common Name Atlantic Pencil Urchin
Scientific Name Eucidaris tribuloides
Family Echinoidea
Origin: South Carolina to Florida; Bermuda; Bahamas; West Indies; Mexico to Brazil
Notes: The short thick and blunt spines of this species of sea urchin easily distinguish it from most North American echinoids. These large spines are often coated with white or pink coralline algae, bryozoans, or sponges. Pencil urchins are found on coral reefs, rocks, and coral rubble near low tide and below in shallow water.
