Our Plants There are few places where a visitor can wander a tropical rainforest and explore a shortgrass prairie in a matter of minutes. Our plant collections provide food and shelter for our butterflies and other invertebrates as well as excellent opportunities to learn about gardening and biology. Conservation informs our horticulture programs - from sustainable gardening to education about the importance of habitat diversity worldwide. Dynamic Duo Butterflies and plants have been partners for millions of years. Plants provide nectar for butterflies, and in turn, butterflies transport pollen from one plant to another, allowing the plants to set seed. Butterflies also use plants as egg-laying sites. Caterpillars munch their host plant's leaves, then find safe branches to metamorphosize inside their chrysalids. |
