Botanical Name: Ananas nanas
Common Name: Miniature Pineapple
Family: Bromeliaceae
Origin: Brazil
The genus Ananas, consisting of 9 species, are terrestrial bromeliads native to Tropical America. They are found in habitats ranging from fairly dry to extremely humid, from low terrain to 3000 feet elevation. The name is derived from its native South American name. A. nanus, a native of Brazil, resembles a miniature A. comosus. The leaves are slightly recurved and may reach 24 inches in length with upward-pointing marginal spines. The cone-shaped inflorescence produces purple or red flowers with yellow bracts. The fruit grows to 1½ to 4 inches in length.
