Common Name MacCleay’s Specter
Scientific Name Extatosoma tiatarum
Family Phasmidae

Notes: One of numerous species of walkingsticks from the Australian region that are often seen in exhibits, MacCleay’s Specter is sexually dimorphic (that is, the males differ from the females in physical shape). The males are smaller and have large functional wings used in flying about in search of females. The females have very short wings and are larger. They have the peculiar behavior of curling up the abdomen over the back like scorpion. Ova are dropped into leaf litter and take up to 8 months to hatch.
