Now open through December 19, 2008
Visitors are invited to the Butterfly Pavilion now through December 19, 2008 to experience and take part in the NASA experiment "Butterflies in Space." The temporary exhibit includes an example butterfly space module and computer to view near-real time photos and videos of the experiment in space. The special exhibit is included in the price of admission.
The Butterfly Pavilion is serving a consultant for the experiment and conducting a "control" experiment on the ground. The experiment will attempt to document the effects of microgravity on metamorphosis of a butterfly. Five Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) larva traveled into space on Friday, November 14 on the Space Shuttle Endeavour for an extended stay on the International Space Station.Visitors can also participate in the experiment at home.
To see the experiment in near real-time with images and videos transmitted to Earth from the Space Station visit the BioServe website http://phoebe.colorado.edu/CSI-03/
Update from the International Space Station:
All of the caterpillars have perished and were not able to pupate. However, visitors can still visit the Butterfly Pavilion and observe the "ground control" experiment where the caterpillars have formed crystallites.
