Common Name Honey Bee
Scientific Name Apis mellifera
Family Apidae
Origin: Europe, Asia
Notes: Most people are surprised to find that the common honeybee is not a native to North America. It was brought over by early settlers and became established very quickly. Native Americans originally called them white man’s flies but soon learned to appreciate the ample honey that is stored by the insects to get them through the winter. Honeybees are the only species in North America who's colonies survive more than one season. They are extremely important for pollinating our food. In actuality most bees in a hive are sterile females who work to provide for the one fertile queen who controls the colony.
