Common Name Green-banded Peacock Swallowtail
Achillides (Papilio) palinurus
Lepidoptera: Papilionidae
Range: Burma to Malaya, Sumatra, Philippines
Ours arrive from: Malaysia, Philippines
Food: various species in the citrus family (Rutaceae: Evodia, Murraya, Citrus spp.)
Notes: This species is a delight to view as it feeds at flowers in the conservatory or basks open-winged on a sunny leaf or rock. The bright green bands ending in a bright red spot on each hind wing makes this one of the more striking species in the Butterfly Pavilion. Their caterpillars feed on citrus plants, and like most other swallowtail species will extend a forked, foul smelling organ, the osmaterium, from behind its head when disturbed. The undersides of the wings help camouflage the animal when sleeping.
