Anthurium, a genus of more than 600 herbaceous species, often epiphytic, is native to tropical America. The name is derived from the Greek words, anthos, a flower, and oura, a tail, which describes the form of the inflorescence. A. andraeanum, a native of Colombia, has a short, upright stem and pointed heart-shaped leaves on long stalks. The leaf blades are 8 – 10 inches long and half as wide. The attractive inflorescence are long stalked and have a bright scarlet, orange-red, pink or white heart shaped spathe, about 3 – 5 inches long, and a yellowish, cylindrical spadix with a white base.

Interesting Facts about this plant: All parts of the plant, if ingested, may cause mild stomach disorder. The plant sap can cause skin irritation. The inflorescences are popular with florists since they have a long shelf life.
