Butterfly and moth wings are covered by thousands of tiny scales that combine to create colorful wing patterns and enable the butterfly to find a mate, communicate and hide from predators.



All teacher workshops are held at the Butterfly Pavilion. Recertification credit (with tuition fee) is available through the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) and payable during the workshop. Friends or Foes? - Exploring Plant and Animal Interactions

For better or for worse, plant traits often reflect a history of interactions with animals. Teachers will observe plant-animal interactions in the garden and then learn how to create a schoolyard habitat for beneficial insects. Learn through projects, outdoor observations, stories, and games that can be used back in the classroom.

Dreamweaver

Discover the crafty side of Anansi the Spider or the ingenuity of Grandmother Spider! Learn something new about these eight-legged creatures and explore the creepy and awesome world of arachnids. There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly – that’s who! Using a variety of children’s literature focusing on bugs and other invertebrates, read and play with the language and unique art that makes these children’s books so memorable!

Secrets of the Rainforest - From Morphos to Malachites

Experience the Butterfly Pavilion's tropical rainforest like never before! Discover the role butterflies and other invertebrates play in diverse and disappearing rainforest ecosystems.  Explore unique relationships between forests and the animals who inhabit them through a variety of hands-on, interdisciplinary (science, art, literacy, geography, math) activities that will complement or add to any classroom life science unit.

The Butterfly Pavilion combines science education with interactive fun to teach visitors about invertebrates and conservation. Our five immersive exhibits, including our rainforest filled with 1,600 free-flying tropical butterflies, provide a year-round, unforgettable experience. Visitors can get up close and personal with live animals, enjoy daily educational programs, explore the wonder of the outdoors on the nature trail, and discover the newest traveling exhibit.
