Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

All classes are based on Colorado State Model Content Standards and Core Knowledge guidelines and incorporate life science with other disciplines such as literacy, geography and math. Classroom time is 45-60 minutes and all classes involve live invertebrate animal interactions.

Choose from the following class options to match your classroom studies:

Science Classes

Tired of using the same vertebrates to teach life science? Let us introduce your classroom to the classification system using the other 97% of life on Earth — invertebrates! We guide students through the scientific classification process through an interactive classroom exploration using several of our invertebrate animals.

Language Arts Classes

Discover friendly arthropods in a variety of stories, poems, and myths. Enjoy an interactive presentation with several short stories accompanied by live animals. Learn to guide your students through any type of literary study using bugs as the topic! Students could pick an arthropod to research and write a report; write invertebrate-inspired poetry; or try their hand at writing their own children’s story using an arthropod as their main character. The possibilities and connections are endless!

Geography Classes

What’s the only continent that doesn’t have butterflies? Where in the world do you find a Thorny Devil walking insect? Go on safari to discover arthropods living in habitats all over the globe. Interact with live animals and locate international habitats from North America to Africa!

Consumer and Family Studies Classes

Have you tried Ample Drumsticks, Scorpion Scalloppine, Larval Latkes, or Bee Delights? Enjoy the cuisine found at the Bug Bites Café. This interactive presentation will introduce your classes to Entomophagy (bug-eating), including its history, culture, and relevance to anyone's daily diet. Students will have the opportunity to try such delicacies as chocolate-covered insects, cheddar-cheese mealworms, and sour-cream-and-onion crickets. Come with an appetite!

Art Classes

Arthropods are animals that have jointed legs, exoskeletons, segmented bodies and bilateral symmetry. Discover these fascinating animals and their unique characteristics and appearances! We’ll bring live animals from each of the five classes of arthropods (arachnids, insects, crustaceans, centipedes and millipedes) and engage students with lots of fun facts to stimulate their creativity. Students will then have the opportunity to use the live “models” to sketch, paint, or photograph!

Special Needs Classes

Students will enjoy an interactive, developmentally appropriate “storytime,” while discovering the wonderful world of bugs through an interactive presentation.

Library Book Talks

Does your media center hold book talks during lunch? How about before or after school? Welcome in the spring with a butterfly program -- and don't forget to invite the Butterfly Pavilion to your Halloween festivities and enjoy an interactive presentation featuring our spiders!

Program Fees

$100—Multiple program discounts are available for high school classes

Travel Fee
