Chilean Rosehair

Chilean Rosehair
Tarantula

Common Name Chilean Rosehair
Scientific Name Grammostola rosea
Family Theraphosidae
Origin: Found in coastal rainforests of Chile

Notes: This is the famous “Rosie”, a Butterfly Pavilion tarantula held by countless visitors, young and old alike. The Chilean rose is one of the most docile species of tarantula and adapts well to captivity.  It lives in the drier parts of Chile, Bolivia and Argentina and eats most arthropods smaller than itself.  As with most New World tarantulas, the venom is mild and is used mostly for feeding, not defense.  Instead, the abdomen is covered with urticating, or itchy, hairs that can be flicked off with the hind legs in the direction of the attacker. Lifespan is around 12 years for females.
