The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Tropical Odyssey Specialist
Bring the exhibit to life as visitors journey with a butterfly from a farm in the rainforest to the Butterfly Pavilion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Bring the exhibit to life as visiting explorers travel through the journey
  • Create meaningful interaction between the exhibit and visitor for a deeper and more thoughtful experience and to make connections between tropical rainforests and our daily life/lives
  • Rotate through the exhibit to answer questions, facilitate flow and ensure safety for a positive experience
  • Encourage and collect visitor feedback about new exhibit

Initial Impact:

Help visitors imagine they are stepping into the rainforest for a journey with our butterflies and walk away with 3 key points:
  • Learn about butterfly life cycles
  • Story of butterfly farms and other sustainable businesses
  • Understand why rainforests are important to our everyday lives and how our actions can help preserve the rainforest

Sustainable Outcomes:

After traveling through Tropical Odyssey, visitors will understand the role they play in the survival of the rainforest. Inspire visitors to share what they learned with others and return to the Pavilion for additional educational opportunities and to change habits in their own lives.


Training & Support:

  • 1.5 hour training about Tropical Odyssey exhibit including information about rainforests, butterfly farms and tropical medicines.
  • Opportunity to bring friends and family into the exhibit to practice your new skills
  • Training with interactive tools to initiate conversations and questions
  • Staff support for your questions and concerns

Commitment:

  • 6 month commitment (length of exhibit’s stay)
  • Shifts available everyday: 10 am –12 pm and/or 12 pm – 2 pm
  • Work with a team to cover weekly shifts giving the Pavilion at least 8 hours per person per month (2-4 volunteers per shift)

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Desire and ability to interact with and relate information to visitors
  • Comfortable interacting with children – enjoyment, enthusiasm, patience, sense of fun
  • Life long learner - willing to ask questions, discover and share information
  • A science or biology background is useful, but not required

The Butterfly Pavilion combines science education with interactive fun to teach visitors about invertebrates and conservation. Our five immersive exhibits, including our rainforest filled with 1,600 free-flying tropical butterflies, provide a year-round, unforgettable experience. Visitors can get up close and personal with live animals, enjoy daily educational programs, explore the wonder of the outdoors on the nature trail, and discover the newest traveling exhibit. Butterflies are just the beginning.
