Giant Arizona Centipede
Common Name: Giant Arizona Centipede
Scientific Name: Scolopendra heros arizonensis
Order: Scolopendromorpha
Range: This species of centipede is found throughout the Sonoran desert of Arizona.
Diet: Small arthropods
Reader Rail Information: Scolopendra Centipedes are swift predators that ambush or actively hunt their prey, which includes mostly smaller arthropods. The venom they use to subdue their prey is delivered through a pair of modified, pincer-like legs, called gnathopods, located on the head. This centipede lives in dry areas and is nocturnal, hiding under bark or rocks during the day; both for protection and to conserve moisture. This is one of the largest species of centipede in the U.S.
