Help Us Protect Our Animals

Animals living in the Tropical Conservatory roam free, unimpeded by cages. Oils and bacteria carried on human hands can stress the animals, shortening their lifespan. By not touching the animals, visitors help keep them safe and healthy.

Colorado Tiger Centipede
Common Name: Colorado Tiger Centipede

Scientific Name: Scolopendra polymorpha

Order: Scolopendromorpha

Range: Southwestern United States south to Panama.

Diet: Small arthropods.

Reader Rail Information: Colorado Tiger Centipedes are swift predators that ambush or actively hunt their prey, which includes mostly smaller arthropods. The venom they use to subdue their prey is delivered through a pair of modified, pincer-like legs, called gnathopods, located on the head. This centipede lives in dry areas and is nocturnal, hiding under bark or rocks during the day; both for protection and to conserve moisture.

If it creeps, crawls, slithers, flies, wiggles or squirms, chances are you'll find it here. Come for the butterflies, then stay for the spiders, scorpions, millipedes, centipedes, horseshoe crabs, sea stars, and walking sticks. Love to learn? We also offer youth education programming, volunteer opportunities and lifelong learning. Only 15 minutes from downtown Denver. Butterflies are just the beginning.
