Thorny Devil Walkingstick
Thorny Devil Walkingstick Common Name: Thorny Devil Walkingstick

Scientific Name: Eurycantha calcarata

Order: Phasmida

Range: They originate from Papua New Guinea and northern Australia

Reader Rail Information: Aptly named males of the Spiny (thorny) Devil sport huge spines on the enlarged hind legs. When disturbed they will raise the abdomen and expose a pair of stink glands at the tip of the abdomen (reminiscent of skunk odor) and spread the hind legs. They are capable of drawing blood when striking with their legs and are commonly found hiding in hollow tree trunks and stumps. This species’ color is affected by humidity levels; in more humid areas it is dark brown while in more arid areas is pale brown
