Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Rainbow Dung Beetle
Rainbow Dung Beetle Common Name: Rainbow Dung Beetle

Scientific Name: Phanaeus amithaon

Order: Coleoptera

Range: This species of dung beetle is found throughout the Sonoran desert of Arizona.

Diet: All stages of the dung beetle feed on dung of large mammals.

Reader Rail Information: These dung beetles are also known as tumblebugs, and can range in color from blue, green, copper to dull black. These beetles get their names from the adult beetle's behavior of rolling balls of dung to a suitable habitat where they will dig a hole and drop in the dung. A single egg is laid on each ball of dung and then covered with soil. The larvae hatches and feeds on the dung until it pupates.
