Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

American Cockroach
American Cockroach Common Name: American Cockroach

Scientific Name: Periplaneta americana

Order: Blattodea

Range: This is an important pest species that comes from tropical Africa.

Diet: Eats most anything edible.

Reader Rail Information: Like most pestiferous (pesky) cockroaches, the American cockroach prefers warm and moist conditions to thrive. The ootheca (egg case) may have up to 30-40 developing eggs in it, and populations build up quickly under ideal conditions. Cockroaches are not necessarily indicative of a dirty home. A single crumb of food can allow a roach to survive for many months providing there is ample water available.
