Did You Know?

Butterfly and moth wings are covered by thousands of tiny scales that combine to create colorful wing patterns and enable the butterfly to find a mate, communicate and hide from predators.

Blue Morpho
Common Name: Blue Morpho

Scientific Name: Morpho peleides

Family: Morphidae

Range: South America

Fun Fact: The blue color on the wings is not from pigmentation but is an example of iridescence: the fine scales covering the Morpho's wings reflect light at a wavelength that appears blue. The scale structure has been studied for anti-counterfeit applications in paper money and credit cards.
