The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Scientific Name: Mastigoproctus giganteus

Order: Thelyphonida

Range: Southwestern United States and adjacent Mexico

Diet: Small invertebrates

Reader Rail Information: Vinegaroons, also called “Whip Scorpions”, are non-venomous but defend themselves with an 80% concentrate of acetic acid (vinegar) that they spray from the base of their tail. These animals have poor vision and use their whip-like tails and front pair of legs as antennae
