Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Pink Toed Tarantula
Pink Toed Tarantula Common Name: Guyana Pink Toed Tarantula

Scientific Name: Avicularia avicularia

Order: Araneae

Range: This species is found throughout northern South America and some islands in the Caribbean.

Diet: Commonly known to eat insects such as crickets, butterflies, and moths.

Reader Rail Information: Early explorers reported seeing these large spiders eating young birds stolen from their nests. However, this behavior has never been documented or photographed. Tarantulas in this genus are commonly called pinktoes because of the color at the tip of each leg. These arboreal (tree-inhabiting) spiders are docile by nature.
