Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Mexican Red Leg Tarantula

Scientific Name: Brachypelma emilia

Order: Araneae

Range: Native from Mexico to Panama and has a fairly wide distribution area.

Diet: Food consists of ground-dwelling invertebrates.

Reader Rail Information: This tarantula is found in semi-desert scrublands. Due to its extremely docile nature and exquisite colors, this species is highly prized by tarantula enthusiasts. The most significant difference in respiratory systems between spiders and insects is that spiders require blood or hemolymph to “breathe” but insects typically do not.
