Reader Rail Information: This tarantula is found in central Mexican deserts and scrub. The Mexican Red Knee tarantulas are so colorful that many species have been over-collected in their native habitats. Recently, efforts to preserve the Mexican species have been extensive. To date, all species of Brachypelma are classified as C.I.T.E.S. (Congress on the International Trade of Endangered Species) II animals and the Mexican government has prohibited trade of all Brachypelma caught in the wild. The government now keeps habitat locations a secret. Proudly, this spider is the product of captive breeding programs. Specimens have been kept in captivity for up to 40 years.
