Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Indian Ornamental Tarantula
Common Name: Indian Ornamental Tarantula

Scientific Name:
Poecilotheria regalis

Order: Araneae

Range: Native to southwestern India through the Nilgiri Hills to Sri Lanka.

Diet: Arboreal insects, lizards, and small birds.

Reader Rail Information: Indian Ornamental spiders are very fast and aggressive. The Indian and Sri Lanka natives are very frightened of these spiders. The Greek word poikilos means varied, many colored, or dappled and aptly suggests the pattern of color on the species. This species is hardy and tolerates a wide range of climate and humidity. When raised together from spiderlings, P. regalis can be kept communally.
