Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Emperor Scorpion
Emperor Scorpion Common Name: Emperor Scorpion

Scientific Name: Pandinus imperator

Order:
Scorpiones

Range: They are native to West Africa (Ivory Coast, Senegal, Ghana, and Sierra Leone).

Diet: Prey is usually large insects and small vertebrates, such as lizards.

Reader Rail Information: This is the most often exhibited species of scorpion and the largest species worldwide. Emperor scorpions are very docile, rarely stinging. In fact, the usual defense is to pinch with their rather large and heavy claws. They are found commonly in burrows along riverbanks. As a general rule, the larger the claws on a scorpion, the less potent the venom from the tail.
