Did You Know?

The Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone non-profit insect zoo. In its exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe.

Costa Rican Tiger Rump Tarantula
Common Name: Costa Rican Tiger Rump Tarantula

Scientific Name:
Cyclosternum fasciatum

Order: Araneae

Range: Native to the tropical forests in Costa Rica.

Diet: Prey consists of any invertebrates it can overpower.

Reader Rail Information: This attractive species of small tarantula normally runs about during daylight hours and are thought to mimic orange and black mutillids (velvet ants). Velvet ants have powerful stings and are respected by predators. Thus, by resembling these ants, the tigerrump is also avoided by predators. The animal protects itself by kicking off abdominal hairs, which cause itching dermatitis.
